Into Maasai country
The Maasai people are found mainly in the north of Tanzania and the south of Kenya. They are pastoralists and semi-nomad warriors. They are well known due to their presence in many of the game parks, their distinctive dress, and their traditional dance.
I have met the Maasai twice while I was a guide in Tanzania. The first time was at a small village in the Ngorongoro, and the second time was during a trek with a family in the Ol Doinyo Lengai region.
Village in the Ngorongoro
Ol Doinyo Lengai Region
With a small family, I did a custom trip and one of the activities was a trek in the Ol Doinyo Lengai Region. It is an active volcano in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron.
The experience was much more authentic than a visit at a touristy village in the Ngorongoro. In addition to the scenery, we have been able to glimpse at the everyday life of the locals.
