Ollantaytambo
The fortress of Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is an ancient Inca fortress and archaeological site located in Peru's Sacred Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it dates back to the 15th century and is renowned for its impressive stone terraces, complex irrigation systems and well-preserved architectural structures.
The site served as both a ceremonial center and a strategic stronghold during the Inca Empire, making it an important historical and cultural landmark.
Pinkuylluna
Opposite the Ollantaytambo fortress, on the Pinkuylluna mountain, is another archaeological site also known as Pinkuylluna. The site is on a mountainside and contains several ruins and the famous granaries, as well as offering incredible views of the town and the Ollantaytambo fortress.
Early in the morning, you can admire the fortress in all its splendor even before visitors enter the site.
The town of Ollantaytambo
In the mid-15th century, the city was razed and rebuilt for the Inca elite. Traces of luxury residences and complex earthworks and irrigation can still be seen.
