End of the road
Finally, it's done! I reached the end of the road... I am in Yaviza, a small remote village at the edge of the Darién Jungle.
Sorry? What are you saying? It's not the end of the Pan-American road. The end in Ushuaia, Argentine.
Crap! Am I still very far from the end? No, not very far, only 7033 kilometres to travel, as the crows flies... From Quebec City, I travelled only 4300 kilometres, also as the crows flies. Wow, not even half the distance done!
Even if it's not the end of the Pan-American road, there is indeed a 100-kilometre zone without any road, between Panama and Colombia. I chose to cross the famous Darien Gap on a plane, but to accomplish this, I must return to the country capital...
Yaviza is a small remote village that feels like the end of the world. A border village even though it's not at the border of two countries. It's an ordinary village like many others in Central America. It marks the transition between transport by road and transport by boat. Indeed, from Yaviza, moving forward can only be done using boats. Small indigenous communities live along the shore of many rivers surrounded by a somewhat unwelcoming jungle.
