Sossusvlei and around
Sossusvlei is a salt pan ('vlei' in Afrikaans) located in the Namib Desert. It is a small salt lake dry most of the year. It is surrounded by dunes reaching up to 375 metres. A fascinating aspect of Sossusvlei is the fact that the dunes are moving because of the very strong winds frequently sweeping the region.
This zone is the most visited site in Namibia. It is quite understandable since the scenery is spectacular.
Around Sossusvlei
From the park entrance gate to Sossusvlei, more than 60 km away, there are several dunes such as Dead Vlei, Hidden Vlei and Dune 45. When the sun is low in the sky, the red colour of the sand and the shadows on the dunes offer a fantastic show.
In certain places, during the rare rains, small temporary lakes are created. Then the water dries out resulting in a lovely natural sculpture.
