Zacatecas
Zacatecas, founded in 1548 by the Spanish, is another city designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like Guanajuato, the wealth of the city is due to the rich silver deposits that created the wealthy barons of Zacatecas. At the beginning of the 18th century, the mines were producing 20% of Nueva España's silver. Unlike Guanajuato, the flow of silver diminished more quickly. At the beginning of the 19th century, the production was much lower, but improved a few decades later.
In 1914, during the Mexican Revolution, Francisco 'Pancho' Villa defeated a stronghold of 12,000 soldiers in the city. Nowadays, Pancho Villa is still honoured by the locals.
