Palenque is one of the best examples of Mayan architecture. Moreover, the site is even more interesting since it is located in the dense jungle.
The name Palenque is a Spanish term meaning 'Palisade.' Its true name from the Mayan era may have been Lakamha meaning 'Big Water.' The first occupation of Palenque was around 100 BC, and its peak was from 630 to 740 AD. After 900 AD, the city was largely abandoned.
After it was abandoned, the jungle quickly swallowed the city and it was only rediscovered in 1746. It was only in 1837 that the site was properly investigated by an archeologist from New York. Nowadays, ancient secrets are still found amid the earth of the ruins.
