Morelia

Morelia - Michoacán - Mexico

Morelia is the state capital of Michoacán and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The historical centre is superb and very well preserved. Morelia, founded in 1541, is one of the first Spanish cities of New Spain. Some buildings still have their original facade from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Even though Morelia is a superb colonial city, it has a big problem. There are no pedestrians-only streets in the historical centre and traffic from cars, buses, and trucks is very dense. To me, it's an important factor that may be one of the reasons that few foreign tourists visit Morelia.

University of Michoacán Library.

Here is a stunning library. It is located in an old Jesuit Temple from the 16th century. It shelters ancient books on the history of kings and queens, Spain, Europe, and the colonies.

There are 22 901 books in this library. The books date from the 15th to the 20th century. Most of these books can be borrowed in order to better preserve them. A visit to this site is a highlight of a trip to Morelia if you are interested in books or just photography.
