Livingstonia

September 8, 2015  —  Malawi
Road from Chitimba to Livingstonia - Malawi
There are 20 hairpin bends along the road.

Livingstonia is perched at 700 metres above Lake Malawi. The road to get there is a series of hairpin bends so tight that the last of them is only 4 km as the crow flies from the town of Chitimba on the lakeshore. However, the drive is 15 km long before reaching the top of the escarpment.

The town of Livingstonia was founded by Scottish missionaries at the end of the 19th century. Isolated on the mountain, the town is home to a lodge, a technical college, a university, a hospital, several administrative buildings, and a large church; all dating from the turn of the years 1900.

The church has a stained-glass window with the famous explorer Dr. David Livingstone.

At the end of 1900s, the local people were hiding in this cave to flee the slavers coming to capture them.

Here is one of the coolest lodges in Malawi (or even in Africa). The site is gorgeous and well thought of as well as being geared toward backpackers. A stay at this place only cost a few dollars and the views at sunset and sunrise are splendid.
