Sani Pass
The previous post was about Sani Pass. It described the drive up from South Africa to the Kingdom of Lesotho. Now I have reached the small border post of Lesotho. Entering the country couldn't have been easier. The custom officer asked me how long I wanted to stay and gave me the month I wished; officially, Canadians can only stay 15 days.
On the top of the plateau, it is another world. Instead of a developed country, we discover a country of shepherds with their sheep, goats, or cows. They wear rubber boots, a thick blanket, and a winter hat or a balaclava. They walk all day with their animals and the main means of transport is the horse (or pony). Believe me, it is quite a change.
On top of the plateau lies the highest pub in Africa at 2874 metres. One can take a drink and a meal as well as sleep in a cottage, a dorm, or camp out. The only problem is the cold... slightly below zero the night I was there.
