Gracias - Ruta Lenca - Honduras
La Merced, a 400-year-old church.

The small colonial town of Gracias was founded in 1536, and it once was the capital of Honduras. The early colonists had a long conflict with the Lenca people and its leader Lempira. The Lenca fiercely resisted the attempt to conquer and incorporate the region to Honduras. The country's currency is the lempira in honour of this indigenous figure.

Gracias is the gateway to the magnificent Lenca Road, where pretty villages succeed one another over a fabulous mountains decor. A few kilometres from the town, Celaque National Park is home to the highest mountain of the country; Cerro de las Minas at 2849 metres.

Fort San Cristóbal was built in the middle of the 19th century on a hill dominating the town of Gracias. Despite an impressive construction, the fort has never seen any actions.
