Trinidad to Guayaramerín

Travelling through the Amazon basin, I thought I was going to be riding on beautiful roads surrounded by lush rainforest and exotic animals. My experience was very different.

If you only follow the roads, you are surrounded by fields with cows or farmland. It is very rare to be in the lush forest. To explore the jungle, the ideal way would be to take a boat, but as I was in the dry season, I could not find a transport that would take me from Trinidad to Guayaramerín in the north of Bolivia.

So I travelled the Bolivian Amazon basin purely by road. It was a bit horrible, as I rode hundreds of kilometres of roads in intense heat exceeding 34 degrees Celsius and was covered in red dust most of the time.

There are certainly a few places that are pretty, but generally speaking, this was not my favourite part of the country. On the other hand, this experience made me realize that when I'm in Brazil, I'll favour waterways. In Brazil, the rivers are bigger than in Bolivia and they are navigable year-round. It will be much more pleasant to travel slowly on a boat, watching the landscapes go by and sleeping in a hammock.
