On the road #3
Road from Alpasinche to Tinogasta
Tinogasta
The town of Tinogasta is quite forgettable, but to the north, there are some old adobe (mud brick hardened in the sun) buildings worth a visit.
The Oratorio de los Orquera is a small chapel built at the beginning of the 18th century. It is made from adobe and covered with a layer of mud.
Road 40 - KM 4040
Route 40, or Ruta Nacional 40, is a legendary Argentinian road crossing the country from north to south over a length of about 5000 kilometres. It links La Quiaca at the Bolivian border to the far south of Patagonia.
It is the longest road in the country. It starts at sea level in Patagonia and reaches its highest point at the Abra del Acay mountain pass in the province of Salta at an altitude of 4,895 metres.
I am now at kilometre 4040 of route 40.
Shincal de Quimivil
The ruins of Shincal de Quimivil were one of the regional capitals of the Inca Empire for over 60 years. After the arrival of the conquistadors, the site was used as barracks for the Spanish army under the commandment of Diego de Almagro in 1536.
In 1558, the town of Londres of New England was founded at about 4 km of the Shincal ruins.
